ILTA Law Department Symposium

Date: Friday, March 2, 2007
Time: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Theme: Optimizing the Corporate Legal Department

Optimal performance is achieved in a legal department when management allows attorneys to focus on the most important legal work, provides technology tools to facilitate work and enhance performance and empowers both legal and support staff.

This conference is designed to help those who manage law department operations to deliver all three, resulting in a more effective and efficient legal department.

Agenda:

 8:00 –  9:00   Continental Breakfast with Sponsors

9:00 – 10:15   Shared Pain:  Changing Requirements Compel Partnerships between Corporate Legal and Corporate IT
Nobody said it would be easy.  And nobody said you'd have to do it alone.  Corporate IT controls the "S" in ESI and has the tools that can help manage and track its identification, preservation and collection.  Corporate IT must be your greatest ally in addressing ESI burdens.  However, legal discovery will never be corporate IT's only concern; it has competing, and sometimes conflicting, responsibilities.  A successful partnership between corporate legal and corporate IT has become increasingly important so that each can understand the disparate needs and challenges while always approaching legal discovery as a company business requirement in a manner that has a chance of supporting both legal and IT goals.  This panel will include a discussion of how previous legal/IT partnerships have been successful, what challenges were encountered and how they were addressed, and what is being currently planned or underway for responding to the rules changes regarding ESI.

10:15 – 10:45   Break with Sponsors

10:45 – 12:00   The Many Faces of Knowledge Management
Law department knowledge management comes in different flavors.  It can be leveraged to facilitate centralization of knowledge and information sharing internally within the department, with outside counsel and preferred suppliers and/or with clients.  Each approach to implementation presents its own unique set of challenges and the panelists in this session represent corporate law departments with mature, successful programs and will contrast and compare the respective business drivers, technology, challenges and lessons learned.

12:00 –  1:30   Lunch and Key Note Speaker

 1:30 –  2:45   Managing Matter Management
Matter management tools help corporate legal departments effectively track and analyze legal matters, and these systems, when used properly, can support key managerial decisions.  But like any good system, matter management itself needs managing and good maintenance procedures in order to work correctly.  This session looks beyond the "bells and whistles," the technology, and the features of matter management systems and examines the pragmatic, day-to-day effort needed in making these systems work for everyone in the corporate legal department.  Topics include maintaining data quality, identifying what to store and track, applying appropriate resources, reporting, data entry procedures and records retention issues.

 2:45 –  3:15   Break with Sponsors

 3:15 –  4:30   Law Department Roundtable Discussion
Join this roundtable discussion focusing on various topics of interest to law departments.  This will be a very interactive discussion amongst the attendees, moderated by David Rohde of Baker Robbins & Company.  We look forward to everyone's shared opinions and questions, or perhaps just relay a story about a project or issue that you're dealing with.  This session is all about networking with your peers!
