Topic:  Building and Managing Ethical Walls

Lunch Sponsored by:  Integration Appliance, Inc.

Description:  In a law firm environment, building and maintaining ethical walls is critical to client satisfaction, regulatory compliance, and avoidance of liability. As part of new business intake, firms often discover conflicts of interest. In response, they typically create ethical walls -- restrictions to prevent attorneys from accessing sensitive information. In most cases, firms may employ manual or ad hoc processes to create walls within their document management systems, but settle short of a pervasive approach and neglect other systems where sensitive information is stored and accessible. This session will provide attendees with an understanding of the challenges, approaches, pitfalls and best practices for creating and managing ethical walls. It will include real-world case studies, interactive group discussion and an optional technology demonstration. This discussion will also include a review of:

Risk, insurance, and public policy issues driving the need for ethical walls

The different types of ethical walls (inclusionary, exclusionary, multi-sided) and how to apply such walls to specific conflict situations such as groups, lateral hires, firm mergers and other scenarios

The technical, process and human requirements and pitfalls associated with ethical walls

The system and process integrations required to fully protect walled information not just within firm DM systems, but also across all relevant electronic information repositories

Key components of an ethical walls design, implementation and roll-out plan
