But Wait... There's More - From Intranets to DLP edition

This past week members discussed the need for an intranet, data loss prevention and more. Explore curated sources on these topics including some from ILTA’s treasure chest.

To Intranet or Not to Intranet?

Members recently asked whether we still need an intranet in our organizations. Many responded yes, we do! ILTA’ns also acknowledged the significant effort required to make an intranet effective. Just in time your ILTA peers, Andrea Alliston and Nicola Shaver, provide insight on “How to Survive Complex Projects: Search, Intranet and Beyond.”  This first of a multi-part series comprises the decision making stage. After getting comfortable with a complex project like developing or re-vamping an intranet, read Paul Bedford of Acrowire’s blog post, “What Makes a Great Intranet?” He lists ten qualities of a great intranet for you to consider. For more on intranet related tools listen to “Is Enterprise Search Worth the Money?” and the “Business Intelligence Showcase” from ILTACON 2016. For the near future it seems we will continue to use intranets but always be ready for change. Facebook released Workplace in October 2016. Workplace could be the next Google+ or it could become the new way we work.

Data Loss Prevention (DLP) Buy-in

DLP poses challenges on at least two fronts. First, getting the job done especially with a smaller team and budget. For guidance listen to the ILTACON 2016 recording, “Cost Effective Ways to Detect and Prevent Data Loss” and read “Skills You Need to Climb the Mountain of Data Challenges.” Second, the DLP controls and other security measures you enforce will not win you many popularity contests. Be prepared for the perspective of attorneys and staff by reading “They Are Going to Share Files With or Without You.”  You will also need buy-in and can do so with security awareness. At the LegalSEC Summit 2016 and again at ILTACON 2016, ILTA volunteers presented a great security awareness session with everything you need to get your security awareness plan underway, “Security Awareness: A Blueprint from Start to Finish-ish.” Still in the planning mood? Watch the webinar recording, “Create an Effective Long-Term Cybersecurity Strategy.”

SOMETHING EXTRA –Guides to Doing Business in _____(Fill in the Blank)

As globalizations of most economic sectors increases, we all need to know more about how business operate in other countries. It informs contracts, working relationships, technological capabilities and security to name just a few issues ILTA members could encounter. CT Wolters Kluwer has overviews including the Doing Business in China and the Doing Business in Southeast Asia guides. For more on developing strong working relationships across the globe, read the ILTA white paper article, “Keeping Innovation On Track Across Global Cultural Lines.”

As ILTA’s content curator, I’m always monitoring the discussion forums to discover what topics are top-of-mind among the members. Each week, I focus on a few areas that spark your interest, and I provide some curated resources to assist your own information-gathering on the topics.
