Keynote Address: Fin(Legal)Tech - Law's Future from Finance's Past
Since the global financial crisis, the legal industry has experienced significant changes. These changes have led many to question the future of the legal industry. The exploration of law's future typically involves the search for the appropriate analogy or use case to describe the current and/or future dynamics of the legal market. While no single analogy can quite characterize the matter, the history of finance (from Black-Scholes to algorithmic trading) offers important lessons for law. In this presentation, Professor Katz will explore fin(tech) and the lessons that financial technology might offer for the future of legal technology (and well as the overall legal industry).
Daniel Martin Katz, J.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Law, Illinois Tech - Chicago Kent Law

10:05 - 10:50 a.m.
Keynote Address: The Honourable Mr Justice Kevin Zervos SC
Kevin Zervos, Judge of the High Court of Hong Kong, will be interviewed on current money laundering and corruption issues facing the Asian legal system and their impact on law firms and corporations. Zervos was a veteran of frontline criminal prosecutions spanning two decades and had a reputation of being a formidable criminal courtroom advocate and human rights specialist.

Coffee and Networking

11:10 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Panel: It's a New Age in Data Privacy - Safe Harbour
Data laws are changing and the Schrems judgment declared the "safe harbour" decision to be invalid. Companies and law firms complying with Safe Harbour will no longer automatically comply with EU data protection directives. We will explore the basis of the court's judgment, look at practical and legal implications, and discuss what steps can be taken to mitigate risks in the light of the judgment, and the impact on the manner and complexity of cross-border e-disclosure and global information governance. Come away with a checklist of questions to ask to help you understand whether your data is at risk.
Chris Dale, Consultant, eDisclosure Project
Dmitri Hubbard, Regional Vice President, Xerox

12:05 - 1:00 p.m.
Panel: Managing Innovation and the Business; The Impact of IT Budget on Innovation
Legal services are transforming as the pressure to innovate continues. Driving innovation in your organisation is necessary to move forward into the new generation. What are clients asking for, and how can technology add real value? How are regional, market positioning and historical differences affecting innovation in law firms and legal departments? Let’s explore innovations already in play; how other market participants, such as legal tech startups, accelerators and alternative business structures, are responding; and what you can do meet the challenges of innovating legal services. The success and future of the IT department depends heavily on the degree to which the CIO or IT department is ready to meet new challenges, take on difficult issues (including their own people) and make tough and far-reaching decisions. The new breed of CIO faces a changing landscape and must plan for what the IT department will look like in 5 years' time. Some companies and law firm IT departments are describing themselves as "IT companies". What is the impact and how is this being felt in Asia?
Bob Charlton, Head of Asia, Hong Kong Managing Partner, Berwin Leighton Paisner
Vivian Ng, General Counsel, NetApp

1:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Lunch & Networking

2:00 - 2:45 p.m.
Panel: Intersection to Interchange - The Crossroad of Technology, Data and the Regulatory Landscape
The pace of emerging technologies is escalating, along with the ways those technologies are being used in the legal industry. Business communications now reside in myriad electronic locations and on multiple devices, increasing the complexity of data privacy and eDisclosure concerns, while regulatory support lags behind. We will discuss the impact of emerging data issues and the regulatory lag on law firms and clients, and provide a framework for dealing with these issues that allows collaboration and the communications to continue to flow unimpeded.
Adi Elliott, Vice President of Market Planning, Epiq Systems

Panel: Artificial Intelligence - The Impact of AI and Real Business Applications in Legal
In the last year, there has been a resurgence of interest in artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential to disrupt and transform knowledge industries. Join us as we demystify machine learning to understand what it is and what it isn't, how your organization can benefit from the practical implications, how to decide if you should adopt AI in some manner and we will highlight examples of AI used in specific law firms.
