Electronic and Digital Signatures Reference Guide – A guide for the rest of us!

For many years now, governments and organizations around the world have had the ability to “e-sign” documents. Due to the cost, complexity, and myriad of regulations, many organizations have just simply stayed away and maintained the proven practice of “wet” ink signatures.

As the situation with the global pandemic changed, so did attitudes and regulations surrounding electronic signatures. More and more organizations needed the ability to sign documents electronically to keep revenue streams flowing. The need for electronic signatures went quickly from “nice to have” to “must have”.

This new business imperative has left a lot asking, “What do we do now?”.

ILTA Volunteers have come together to bring a little order out of the chaos! Introducing our “Electronic and Digital Signatures” reference guide.  This document is intended to help you get started in understanding:

  • What constitutes an “Electronic Signature”
  • How an “Electronic Signature” and a “Digital Signature” differ
  • What to use and when
  • Global rules that govern signatures
  • When you must have the “Wet Signature”

This is not intended to be a definitive guide to electronically signing documents. Rather, this is meant to help clarify some of the language and start you in the right direction. For more detailed information about the legal position, please consult a lawyer!

We hope you find this reference guide useful as you continue your work from home journey!

Happy E-Signing!
