ILTACON 2016: The Essential Guide for Marketing, Business Development and Everyone Else!

ILTACON 2016 is just around the corner, and if you’re anything like me, you’ve started to take a peek at the more than 200 sessions offered throughout the week.  You might notice that the session agenda for this year now includes a “Target Audience” column to help you more easily identify the sessions that might be of most interest to you. 

In this post, I’m going to focus on those sessions most suited for the Marketing and Business Development professionals who will be attending the event, as well as a few of the fun networking events open to all attendees.

I’ll also add some information on those sessions that are designed to appeal to a much wider audience, and that will give you a great opportunity to expand your network while gaining great insight on topics like professional development and leadership skills.

 

Sunday August, 28th:

ILTACON 2016 unofficially kicks off at 4:00 p.m. with a series of concurrent “Communities of Interest”.  These 90 minute informal networking events are a great opportunity to meet or reconnect with your peers, and discuss some shared interests.  I’ll be hosting the Marketing and Business Development Community of Interest, so stop by for a drink and say hello!

At 6:00 p.m., is Conference Orientation, a great opportunity for both first-time attendees and veterans to receive more details about various events happening throughout the week.

At 7:00 p.m ILTACON 2016 officially begins with the Opening Reception!  Join ILTA members and vendors as we go “Up, Up & Away” at the opening reception in and outside the Atrium at Gaylord National.  You’ll have a chance to connect with old friends and make new ones, while enjoying hors d'oeuvres and liquid refreshments.

Monday, August 29th:

1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. - BFFs: Marketing and IT Are in This Together!  Marketing and IT work together on projects all the time, but they don't always speak the same language. We're putting some marketing and IT duos on the hot seat and asking them a series of revealing questions to determine how well they know each other (or don't). Walk away knowing how to better communicate with your other half!

4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. - Stand Out From the Crowd:  Building the Brand Called You What is your personal brand? In this hands-on workshop, learn how to identify and develop your unique brand to help you stand out from the crowd and get noticed. Walk away with a template and action plan for building and managing your personal brand.

 

Tuesday, August 30th:

11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. - Client and Matter Profiling That Matters  Take a look at third-party tools built to streamline matter profiling, and hear how several firms gained up-front and ongoing support from attorneys and administrators and then designed their processes and technology to address their particular objectives.

11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. - Client and Law Firm Workshop - Data, Metrics, Strategy  Following Dan Katz's provocative keynote, innovators from corporate legal operations and law firms will share their thoughts and lead audience discussions related to leveraging data and metrics and measuring performance in both client and law firm organizations.

1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. - Using Competitive Intelligence To Improve Strategies and Decision-Making There are marketing and library professionals who have taken big (and little) data to great new heights. Learn about their innovative processes, including the use of marketing and competitive intelligence dashboards that provide users with easy-to-use CI data.

1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. - Leadership Through Change (Sharon Swartworth Leadership Development Seminar)  It’s time to talk about leading through change. Brigadier General LeAnne Burch (retired) will look at the profile and qualities of a great leader in terms of position, ranks and actions, and the concept of modeling vs. mentoring. Let's discuss embracing change, recognizing future leaders and capitalizing on their initiative, and why mentorship is such a big deal.

 

Wednesday, August 31st:

11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. - Burnout to Badass: Energize. Engage. Ignite.  In our fast-paced world, we are plugged in 24/7. We have more clients to please, more emails to answer, more phone calls to make, more meetings to attend, more tasks to juggle and more places to go. The consequence of pushing ourselves too hard or too continuously is burnout. How can you go from burnout to badass? With strategies meant to energize, engage and ignite!

11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. - Life After Death by PowerPoint  Don McMillan, emcee for Tuesday evening's Awards Dinner, wants to stomp out "death by PowerPoint." He will offer insights and tips on using humor to make your presentations more effective and engaging. He'll even share funny material you can incorporate into your next presentation. Come for this light-hearted session that will pack a valuable punch. Let's learn and laugh!

1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. - Mapping the Customer Journey  Mapping the journey our customers take will help us identify touchpoints so we can serve them better. Hear from law firms and vendors that are bringing together a full spectrum of marketing technologies, including CRM, social media, websites and business intelligence tools, to help firms identify the who, what and where of client engagement.

3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. - Developing and Managing Emotional Intelligence  You might be book smart, but are you emotionally smart? Professionals who have high levels of emotional intelligence are often said to be more successful in their careers. Working well with people, including direct reports, peers, customers and management, can be crucial to success. During this workshop, we'll explore key skills that can develop and build upon your emotional intelligence and tools for managing your emotions.

3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. - Finding the Fun in Writing Fundamentals  Ongoing professional development should include continuous improvement of your writing skills. The good news is that honing your skills in grammar, usage, sentence structure, tone and the gazillion other nuances of writing need not be boring or laborious. If you approach the topic with humor, the lessons will be stickier. Our panel of witty experts will present an array of writing-focused topics to educate and entertain you. Many topics will be contributed via crowdsourcing.

 

Thursday, September 1st:

2:45 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. - The Gang's All Here! A Marketing Technology Roundtable  That’s right – we’ve saved the best for last!  Join this interactive session with your marketing peers (and ME‼)  Proposed topics and questions will be gathered during the Communities of Interest on Sunday. Come ready to ask questions, express your thoughts and share ideas.
