Selecting Projects that Provide Value to an Organization Each day, projects are selected within an organization for a variety of reasons and not all of them have straightforward purpose or value. The role of a project manager is to understand and illustrate why the project was prioritized in order to align the project team toward executing the initiative that has been made by leadership. In order to draw enough justification to select a project, every organization needs strategic business goals, which offer a purpose and a prioritized hierarchy of potential added business value. For this article, Cooley LLP's business value has been defined as the net-benefits ...

Thinking about working from home?  So is everyone else… Back in January 2020, a group of ILTA volunteers gathered (in person) to discuss content for the coming year.  One topic was the future of remote working at law firms.  At that time, many firms already allowed remote working—some operated as fully remote firms and others allowed remote working a few days week either firm-wide or on a case-by-case basis.  We also knew that while some firms embraced the concept of a fully remote work environment, others felt it would negatively impact corporate culture and productivity.  We thought it would be an interesting exercise to investigate the future of remote ...

Please enjoy this blog post co-authored by Ignacio  Raffa, Technology Director, ZTZ Tech Group, Nicolas Vilela, Co-Founder & CEO, ZTZ Tech Group and Andrew Bryant, Chief Operating Officer, ZTZ Tech Group. Efficiency and Automation in Legal Tech Security and efficiency can be seen as an either/or scenario. You can only increase security by sacrificing efficiency, and vice versa. If you want to protect your home by locking the doors, you have to fumble around for your keys each time you want to enter. You also have to search around your home for them each time you want to leave (“where did I put my keys?!”). The great thing about computers ...

Electronic and Digital Signatures Reference Guide – A guide for the rest of us! For many years now, governments and organizations around the world have had the ability to “e-sign” documents. Due to the cost, complexity, and myriad of regulations, many organizations have just simply stayed away and maintained the proven practice of “wet” ink signatures. As the situation with the global pandemic changed, so did attitudes and regulations surrounding electronic signatures. More and more organizations needed the ability to sign documents electronically to keep revenue streams flowing. The need for electronic signatures went quickly from “nice to have” to ...

In past months, most businesses have been forced into home working and generally, this has been incredibly successful. Now that companies are beginning to re-open their offices, a balance of working between the office and at home is likely to become the “new normal”. Many companies are looking at strategies for how to deliver the best working experience for their staff regardless of location, however, it is beginning to raise a number of questions specifically around security, performance and supporting both of those. THE TROUBLE WITH HOME WORKING Staff feedback is that the home office isn’t ideal and whilst users can work, the home network can cause ...

In the New Normal a law firm needs a digital mailroom, not an ad hoc scan-to-email workaround.  A digital mailroom built for a law firm needs to be integrated with the firm’s document management system (DMS) so that postal mail can be digitized and seamlessly delivered within the safe confines of the DMS. When the pandemic sent the workforce to home offices, most law firms quickly starting scanning to email to get the mail out. Facilities management or available clerical staff went into the office and cobbled together this new work process. Forced to use existing scan-to-email at copiers, they were jamming a critical mail delivery process through a scanning ...

Everyone’s talking about the philosophy of getting back to the workplace – but for FMs and office managers at law firms and corporations, the hottest topics are all practical ones. They’re asking questions including: How do we manage the number of people coming into the office? How do we manage density of people in the space? How do we manage meetings efficiently now they are a mixture of live and virtual? How do we get visitors and contractors in and out securely? What about track and trace? The list of questions just goes on…NFS Technology tackles some answers as we contemplate returning to the office. Check out our special ...

Friday morning I had the great pleasure of joining Joy Heath Rush and Shy Alter to discuss how one could get the most out of Virtual Conferences .  We had a lively discussion around the following questions:  How can we make the most of a virtual experience? How is networking virtually different from networking in-person? What are some tips and tricks for networking virtually? Below recaps some of the notes from the chat and some thoughts I had shared with Joy when I volunteered to be a “non-expert” on the panel. If you have time, please check out the recording. You can find it here. You can control your Zoom Settings and these are a few that I have found ...

By Ceyda Tocsoy & Gordon Moffat -  Lawyers have a perfectly reasonable expectation of being able to find the date and time on which an email was sent or on which a document was modified or created. This should be effortless and quick. And yet, in e-discovery, this determination can be anything but straightforward from a technical and workflow perspective.  The consequences of out-of-control time zone information can include improper display of time stamps on emails and documents when viewed or printed, metadata inconsistencies, interference with proper email threading and other analytic functions, mis-grouping of records during culling and a host of confusing ...

Turning ILTACON into ILTA>ON was always going to bring with it a raft of changes, some of them unwelcome (we all wish we weren’t missing out on the regular in-person networking and events, and I sure wish I was about to experience Nashville’s music scene for the first time) and some of them unexpectedly positive. Let’s face it, attending ILTACON during a regular year is expensive. Even large firms can only justify sending one or two people per department, which means that many are unable to experience it. And in spite of its international appeal, ILTACON takes place in the United States, which makes it truly cost (and time) prohibitive for members across ...

Remote working has been on the rise for some time, but the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated this trend. A recent poll of legal administrators found that 91% believe these changes in working practices will become permanent. Large national and international law firms like Husch Blackwell and Dentons have recently announced office closures, with staff working from home permanently. Great communication has always been at the heart of successful firms, and in the new normal, having the right technology to support effective collaboration has never been more important. The growth of Microsoft Teams as a cloud telephony solution In the last few months ...

Covid restrictions have forced many firms to pivot from in person to remote work. In the first phase, many firms were focused on the technical tools of making the remote work transition a reality. But now, as most of the critical needs and IT infrastructure is in place, the next question is: How do we transition to managing remote teams?                My name is Nitza Medina-Garcia, CRM and I have worked as a remote worker and have managed remote teams at my company InfoCompass for over 13 years. I would like to share some best practices for managing remote technical workers. Know who is on your team and what they should be doing Ok, this one ...
