Effective August 14, 2020, Utah put in place a bold experiment: a two-year “legal regulatory sandbox” pilot program. Designed to expand access to justice, the “regulatory sandbox” for “non-traditional” providers of legal services – including service providers not wholly owned by lawyers and services – creates a mechanism for delivering legal services in a new way.
We are honored to welcome Justice Constandinos “Deno” Himonas of the Utah State Supreme Court and John Lund, Chair, Utah Supreme Court’s Innovation Office. They will be answering our questions about the landmark effort.
To quote Justice Himonas and Mr. Lund: “We cannot volunteer ourselves across the access-to-justice gap. We have spent billions of dollars trying this approach. It hasn’t worked. And hammering away at the problem with the same tools is Einstein’s very definition of insanity. What is needed is a market-based approach that simultaneously respects and protects consumer needs. That is the power and beauty of the Supreme Court’s rule changes and the legal regulatory sandbox.”
