Boston: The Future of Security and Privacy (Relax, You’re Probably Doing More Things Right than You

When:  Apr 11, 2019 from 12:00 to 13:30 (ET)

Description

It is easy to get caught in the fear cycle of information security threats that never end, controls that are never fully implemented and risks that are never fully understood or addressed. Let’s try to break that cycle together. Take a deep breath… then another… and relax. There is certainly a lot to be concerned about, but you are probably doing more things right than you think.

Many law firms view information security through the lens of current business concerns: General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance, customer security questionnaires, California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), etc. How can law firms react to these immediate concerns while shifting to a forward-thinking perspective on security and privacy?

It’s not about shelving current priorities or trying to guess what the future holds it’s about taking simple steps now to fortify your security. Small changes now can have profound benefits in the future. Here are some simple tweaks we recommend:

  • Align your security and privacy objectives, so they overlap. Security and privacy are firmly linked, so the people who are responsible for these functions need to talk and be accountable to one another. Law firms often see security as an IT problem and privacy as a compliance problem. The sooner you empower these two groups to jointly tackle security and privacy as a whole, the sooner you will see significant traction in both areas.
  • Align your third-party risk management, purchasing, IT security salespeople. These departments need to work very closely together when hiring a new vendor or bringing on a new client, yet they are often siloed from one another. When people in these roles communicate about what clients are asking for, what vendors need to provide, what regulators are demanding, etc., you’ll have stronger business relationships, better contracts fewer security risks and gaps.
  • Get senior leadership buy-in for your security and privacy initiatives. An internal campaign to indoctrinate security and privacy best practices will ensure that you educate your audience effectively.

When your culture is aligned and aware you can maintain, agile security and privacy posture that will enable you to respond quickly to whatever new regulations and cyber threats the future holds.

Please proceed to the elevators located on the south side of the Boston Harbor Hotel. Attendees will need to provide photo ID to security for elevator access.
