General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will be in force on May 25, 2018, in, the European Union. Every law firm, regardless of location, that does business with EU clients will need to adhere to the new stricter requirements of this regulation. The five core changes are:

- Data breach notifications
- Privacy-by-design and by-default
- Extraterritorial compliance
- Risk management documentation including a privacy impact assessment
These new requirements take an aggressive step to protect personal data, and not just personal data, in the EU. Over 60 percent of client information is stored in business documents, representing a significant security risk.
