Many women are drawn to leadership styles that are collaborative and consensus-building and that align with servant leadership. In their leadership development journeys, many disproportionately volunteer for tasks that do not lead to promotion. This can run the gamut of handling refreshments in meetings with peers to driving large-scale initiatives outside of their role to benefit team members and their organization. All of this can lead women to wonder, “why am I volunteering?” Mastery of leadership requires the ability to identify, understand and inhabit the correct form of leadership that a situation requires. Volunteering gives women an amazing opportunity to flex and develop these skills.
