Keynote: Shaping the Next Generation of Leaders in Legal

The welcome and introductions were led by Michele Gossmeyer and Chief Warrant Officer 4 Russell “Rusty” Ferrell. And then American Bar Association Executive Director Jack Rives shared his views on the challenges facing future leaders in the legal industry. He discussed the sweeping changes affecting today’s legal profession and how the next generation of leaders will be impacted. He touched on training the next generation of lawyers and legal staff, drawing insight from his experiences as the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General.

Speakers:  Jack L. Rives

  Jack L. Rives is the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the American Bar Association. He has overall management responsibility for staff operations of the ABA. Prior to that, Lieutenant General Rives served as The Judge Advocate General (TJAG) of the U.S. Air Force. He was the legal adviser to the Secretary of the Air Force and all officers and agencies of the Department of the Air Force. Jack directed all judge advocates in the performance of their duties and was responsible for the professional oversight of more than 2,200 judge advocates, 350 civilian attorneys, 1,400 enlisted paralegals and 500 civilians in the Total Force Judge Advocate General's Corps worldwide. General Rives oversaw military justice, operational and international law, and civil law functions at every level of command.
