Adding Symbols to the AutoCorrect List

If there are symbols you use on a regular basis, it can be a bit of a hassle to go to the Insert tab or menu, click on Symbol and then hunt for the one you want to use. You can memorize the symbol’s character code, or assign a shortcut key to it.

Instead of doing all that, why not add the symbol to your AutoCorrect list? Open the Insert Symbol dialog box by going to the Insert tab, click the Symbol drop-down arrow and click on More Symbols.

Find and click on the symbol you want to add to the AutoCorrect list. Go down to the bottom of the dialog and click the AutoCorrect button. In the Replace box, type the word you want to type in order for the symbol to appear. For example, you may want to enter "degrees" for the degree symbol, or "inverted?" for an upside-down question mark. It should be a word you do not normally type, but one that you will remember.

Click the Add button, click OK and click Close. You are good to go. Type the word and press Enter. If  you do need to type the word you entered in the Replace field without the symbol, click undo, and the word will be there.
