05-17-10 Tip O' The Week

FIND and COUNT FOUND Words

Word 2007/2010 using the Find dialog box.

Press CTRL F to bring up this dialog box

Enter the word in the Find box, click the Reading Highlight button, select Highlight All, and Word tells you how many instances there are and highlights them at the same time!

To make sure it counts just the word instead of the string of characters, click the More>> button to display the Search Options and check "Find whole words only."

(Word 2010 displays a Navigation pane when you click Find or use the Ctrl+F shortcut, where you can enter your search word. But you can also get to the dialog box via the Find Options button at the top of the Navigation pane.)

In addition, if you are not crazy about the Navigation pane that opens in Word 2010 when you press Ctrl+F, you can use Ctrl+G or Ctrl+H, which both open the Find and Replace dialog box to different tabs. Then all you need to do is go to the Find tab from there.
