What You Need to Know About GDPR - An INSIGHT Preview with Andrew Haslam

In “What’s the Real Impact of GDPR?” delegates will play two truths and one lie. Andrew Haslam, eDisclosure Project Manager at Squire Patton Boggs, wonders if you can identify the lie. Andrew and I spoke last week about the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) session he organised for INSIGHT on 17 November in London.

Andrew hopes delegates to the session will learn that “conforming to a privacy shield doesn't mean compliance with GDPR.” Andrew recruited a panel including Hazel Grant of Fieldfisher Law, Gareth Meatyard of Epiq Systems and himself. Hazel will bring her expertise on regulation and policy theories while Gareth will share “war stories” related to compliance. Andrew, Hazel and Gareth will discuss the advantages for early adopters under GDPR, the role of data protection officers (DPO) under GDPR, breach notifications and what the EU can learn from US experiences and whether data mapping helps or burdens the process.

I asked Andrew about the response of law firms to GDPR and becoming compliant. He said, “To be fair, the clock started ticking on the 31st of May this year. We’ve only had six months.” With most firms still in the stage of developing awareness, he said they must create their plan within the year and believes this session at INSIGHT will assist with that process.

With Brexit some wonder if UK firms must become compliant. Chris Dale of the eDisclosure Information Project wrote about this issue recently in “UK Government Confirms It Will Implement the GDPR.” Andrew Haslam sums up the importance of GDPR and his session at INSIGHT, “You have to be compliant. To learn how to become compliant, come to this session.” Visit ILTA INSIGHT for more information.
