But Wait... There's More - KM Strategy and "Taserless" Training

This past week members discussed developing a knowledge management program and more. Explore curated sources on these topics including some from ILTA’s treasure chest.

Developing Your KM Strategy

ILTA members recommended several KM consultants to help develop a knowledge management strategy. ILTA has resources to assist with strategizing too including the ILTA Video, “Starting and Optimizing Knowledge Management Programs: Perspectives Across the Spectrum” and the blog series, “How to Survive Complex Projects” Part One and Part Two. Scan through the articles in ILTA’s Knowledge Management white papers from 2015 and 2016. A few of my favorites include “Architecting KM: Blueprints for Novices to Experts” by Sally Gonzalez, “Surviving Disruption: KM’s Role in the Future Law Firm” by Joel Alleyne and Jamila Maher and “Transforming Tacit Knowledge: Making the Most of What You Know” by Ginevra Saylor. While determining next steps in your strategy, review “The Future of Legal KM” from ILTACON 2016 for strategies to expand KM to client initiatives and watch the ILTACON TV interview with Oz Benamram for insight into what’s next in KM.

SOMETHING EXTRA – Data Tells All and Taser-less Training

A week ago, Chris Dale of the eDisclosure Information Project, wrote “Data in Unlikely Places,” a short and compelling piece. Though the arson case and marathoner dispute may not apply to our daily work, Dale reminds us that “an ever wider range of data is being captured and… that the tools for analysing it and drawing conclusions from it are improving all the time.” Though not a direct counterpoint to Chris Dale, read about data getting it wrong in the Kai Ryssdal’s Marketplace interview of Tom Scocca, “False Information on the Internet Is Hiding the Truth About Onions.”

How do you get attorneys and staff to training? One member suggested tasers. It’s tempting, right? This nagging question will never disappear entirely but ILTA members, Ann Routos, Bradelynn Boyce-Dendy and Sandy Mikita tackled the importance of skill up programs to increase learning in a two-part ILTA virtual roundtable series. If you missed the virtual roundtables, read the Key Takeaways document (login required) from the first roundtable and watch for a second takeaways document coming soon.

As ILTA’s content curator, I’m always monitoring the discussion forums to discover what topics are top-of-mind among the members. Each week, I focus on a few areas that spark your interest, and I provide some curated resources to assist your own information-gathering on the topics. If there are specific topics you would like assistance exploring, please contact me at joanne@iltanet.org
