But Wait... There's More - Retention Plans

This past week members discussed hard drive destruction and more. Jump to the “Something Extra” section for ILTA for KM tips. Explore curated sources on these topics including some from ILTA’s treasure chest.

Retain or Dispose

A member recently asked about hard drive destruction and several ILTA members in the Connected Communities kindly recommended shredding services. This led me to think about a somewhat thorny issue, records management and disposition policies in the legal industry. ILTA has many resources to help you manage the lawyer hoarder in your organization. In 2016 ILTA members Alexander Campbell, Jim Merrifield and Jeffrey Richards, made a podcast for ILTA Radio called “Develop a Records and IG Plan for Defensible Disposition of Edocs.” An ILTA Video recording, “Create Sustainable Cost Containment for Information Governance Initiatives,” learn how to save time and money with the reduction of storage needs as implemented in a strong information governance plan. We often ask, “How do I do it?” and “Where do I start?” Learn from your peers at Jackson Lewis who share a case study, “FileTrail: Jackson Lewis – A Case Study for Modern Records Management.” Besides saving money on storage fees, keeping old records can expose an organization to greater risk. To stay informed and protect your organization, listen to the ILTACON 2017 recording of “Facilitated Strategic Planning for Governance, Risk and Compliance” and watch the ILTA Video, “Information Governance: Effectively Manage Risk.”

SOMETHING EXTRA – KM for Success

Glenn LaForce of Aderant recently wrote about knowledge management as both a revenue generator and a time saver in “Highly Successful Law Firm KM Projects Focus on Revenue and Efficiency.” In the article he shares a framework for initiating KM projects in your firm. And while we are on the topic of knowledge management, look at ILTA’s most recent white paper. It’s on KM!

As ILTA’s content curator, I’m always monitoring the discussion forums to discover what topics are top-of-mind among the members. Each week, I focus on a few areas that spark your interest, and I provide some curated resources to assist your own information-gathering on the topics. If there are specific topics you would like assistance exploring, please contact me at joanne@iltanet.org
