ILTA has defined diversity as celebrating the differences that exist among people and the unique combination of differences that makes us who we are and affects how we experience life. In adopting this definition, ILTA understands that myriad opportunities to improve and enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion exist throughout the ILTA community; trying to address all at once would be impossible.
For over 40 years, ILTA has been working to foster a community and learning how to best continue the advancement of human-powered legal learning. In 2020, ILTA added a Core Value: “Foster diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the ILTA community.” Furthering this Core Value, ILTA established a DEI Task Force with staff support and participation, and from the Task Force, came the Climate Survey.

Today, the omnipresence of data and artificial intelligence (AI) is both a beacon of innovation and a vessel for ethical scrutiny. It is in the vast expanse of zeros and ones that our society finds its most potent catalyst for growth, yet also encounters profound dilemmas around privacy, governance, and the equitable distribution of technology's dividends. Among these challenges, the potential for coded bias within AI models emerges as a subtle underminer of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles that legal professionals are increasingly called upon to address.

DEI Focus Areas (alphabetical order)
Age
LGBTQ+ Status (including gender identity)
Persons with Disabilities
Race/Ethnicity
Sex
In setting these initial priorities, the DEI Committee seeks to make the broadest impact given its limited resources and makes no statement about the needs of one group as compared with others. The DEIC will re-evaluate priorities at a minimum annually and adjust areas of focus as ILTA changes and learns more from our efforts. ILTA needs to be flexible and respond to external and internal events that may warrant shifting priorities rapidly. ILTA will also engage in activities to gain a deeper understanding of the ILTA community’s feelings of inclusiveness and equitable treatment.
