As ILTA’s content curator, I’m always monitoring the discussion forums to discover what topics are top-of-mind among the members. Each week, I’ll focus on a few areas that sparked your interest, and I’ll provide some curated resources to assist your own information-gathering on the topics. This past week members discussed Knowledge Management team structures and how to classify revenue in states with market-based sourcing tax laws. It’s not surprising that many of the best resources sit within ILTA’s treasure chest. If there are specific topics you would like assistance exploring, please contact me at joanne@iltanet.org.

Accounting - Classification of revenue determinations by location

How does one determine the classification of revenue based on the newer market-based sourcing of taxes based on location? I found information one might want to share with an attorney or other expert who can provide a complete answer.  The change in revenue classification happened because of UDITPA, the Uniform Division for Tax Purposes Act. The Uniform Law Commission UDITPA page shows which states follow UDITPA. For a law firm specific perspective, PWC issued a news alert in January regarding Massachusetts’ regulations corresponding to UDITPA. National Law Review also discussed the new act in “Multistate Tax Commission’s Market-Based Sourcing Recommendations for Uniform Division of Income for Tax Purposes Act (UDITPA): Too Little Too Late.” ILTACON 2015 will have a CFO Roundtable on Monday, August 31st to possibly discuss this and other related topics.

Knowledge Management Department Structures

To whom does your top knowledge management professional report? Under which department is your knowledge management team? Does your organization staff anyone in knowledge management? Each organization is different both culturally, technologically and in its information needs. A cookie cutter organization chart will not suffice though guidance will help. ILTA produced two webinars last year on developing and maintain a strong KM program, “Building a KM Program Driven by the Bottom Line: A Case Study” and “Aligning KM Initiatives with Firm Goals”. Another great source for knowledge management information is Nick Milton’s blog, Knoco Stories, and “Who Steers Your KM Strategy” in particular.

Windows 10

In case you missed the announcement, July 29th is the official release date for Windows 10. ZDNet has a good list of preparation steps. “Get Your PC Ready for Windows 10”.  Also, Windows 10 for Mobile won’t be ready until a bit later in the year according to Daily Tech.

Something New

I recently read a Dewey B Strategic post by Jean O’Grady. She reviewed a new tool called Modio Legal. Modio Legal takes news and current awareness from legal publishers (with their consent) and converts it to a human-narrated audio format to be accessed and listened to on a smart phone. Your lawyers on-the-go may want this. To learn more and get a trial password read “Listen Up: Isn’t It Time for Legal Publishers to Offer Audio Playlists? Modio Legal is Open and Ready for Business.”
