ILTA's Leadership Book Club - Simply Said

By Brian Donato posted 05-27-2020 12:36

On Wednesday, May 20th, over 90 people were treated to a book club discussion about “Simply Said: Communicating Better at Work and Beyond” hosted by the author, Jay Sullivan.

The book covers a variety of practical tips on how to communicate with others in person, via presentation, or in writing. Jay focused his presentation on several key themes.  Themes such as “Focusing less on yourself and more on others”, and “Delivering effective messages” were both timeless and resonated especially well with a membership dealing with the challenges of being thrust into a work from home environment.  Members shared their challenges with this situation including:

  • Handling children/parents/pets during the work day.
  • Adapting to inefficient technological set ups at home.
  • Communicating well with others in a virtual environment.
  • Struggling with loneliness, motivation, anxiety.
  • Video conferencing burnout.
  • Blending of work/home boundaries.
  • Missing accidental conversations. The “by the ways”...while getting coffee, in the elevator, passing in the hall.  Conversations in the WFH environment are all pretty much intentional.

We have attached the slides from the presentation for those interested and the Talent Council will be presenting another book club event later this summer.  Stay tuned for more details!
