But Wait... There's More

Recently in the e-groups, discussions included mobile and remote document access, the pros and cons of instant messaging and more. Explore curated sources on these topics including some from ILTA’s treasure chest.

Mobile and Remote Document Access Blah

A few weeks ago members in some e-groups asked questions about accessing documents remotely on mobile devices. Their prescience is amazing. ILTA recently published the Fall issue of Peer to Peer, “Our Mobile Workforce.” With features like Cindy Mitchell’s, “What Are Firms Doing Today to Enable Mobility?” and David Horrigan’s “3 Legal Lessons from the Mobility Movement” and the best practices segment, “The Practices and Pitfalls and Policies of a Post-BYOD World,” ILTA members will feel more secure in the mobility decisions and policies instituted in their organizations.

Instant Messages vs. Email Messages

Instant messaging could alleviate email message storage issues but could also create new headaches with e-discovery. Some of our members want to know if the pros outweigh the cons. A recent ILTA webinar, “Office 365 Conversations- Skype for Business,” provides guidance on implementing Skype for Business in an organization as does Tim James and Jesse Ortiz' session at ILTACON 2015, "Skype for Business in Law Firms: Replacing the Traditional Phone System." At ILTACON 2015, Dan Hauck, Conan Hines and Mark Thorogood recommended collaboration tools like Slack to ease email message overload in “Working Out Loud: Dynamics of Enterprise Collaboration.”  Reducing the number of email messages through instant messaging or collaboration tools can have some drawbacks. Also at ILTACON 2015, Michael Boggs and George Socha led a discussion on “20 E-Discovery Warnings in 60 minutes.” The NextWeb wrote about the benefits to and warnings against eliminating email messages for internal communication in “How Quitting Email Helped My Company Communicate Better.”

Something Extra –Closing Thoughts from Swartworth Leadership Development Seminar, Congratulations to ILTA’s Publications Team and Blah

I wrote three summary pieces on the Sharon Swartworth Leadership Development Seminar last week. To read these and other leadership materials related to the seminar visit the Downloads page of the Sharon Swartworth Leadership Development Seminar. These summaries did not include a brief and informative closing session from the seminar. Major General (ret.) John Altenburg and Judge Advocate General (Ret.) Chris O’Brien highlighted leadership traits and skills to identify in new and emerging leaders. Altenburg and O’Brien focused on positive attitudes, courage and confidence. They encouraged emerging leaders to learn to “manage up” and hone their interpersonal skills. Altenburg and O’Brien also stressed the importance of mentoring to develop skills of a leader and to identify the next leaders. He encouraged all attendees to mentor.

As ILTA’s content curator, I’m always monitoring the discussion forums to discover what topics are top-of-mind among the members. Each week, I focus on a few areas that spark your interest, and I provide some curated resources to assist your own information-gathering on the topics.
