This past week members discussed instant messaging in firms, security awareness and more. Did you notice references to the Legal Innovation and Tech Fest on ILTA’s website? What is it? Who is it? And where is it? Explore curated sources on these topics including some from ILTA’s treasure chest.
Do You IM?
Still considering whether to launch an instant messaging program in your office? Dean Leung shares the “good, the bad and the real” and advice on implementation in the Peer to Peer article, “Instant Messaging for Your Firm.” Next listen to the podcast from the Office 365 Conversations Series, “Skype for Business” and consider all the other applications a tool with IM can offer your organization in “Skye for Business in Law Firms: Replacing the Traditional Phone System” and “Working Out Loud: Dynamics of Enterprise Collaboration.”
Security Awareness – Don’t Be Cavalier this Year
I need not tell ILTA members to protect yourself and your organization from cyber-attacks, but I know you need to remind some attorneys and other staff in your organizations. Recent stories in the discussion groups about hackers replying to your email and devices “listening” in conference rooms may work as scare tactics but you also need a full security awareness program. Julia Montgomery provides strategies for effective security awareness communication in an article from the latest Peer to Peer, “Information Security: Communications That Connect.” For more on this, consider reviewing ILTACON sessions, “Small Firm Forum – Security: The Walls that Protect” with a great hand-out loaded with resources and “A Rich Security Program Built on a Dime” with many sample policies. ILTA continues to provide great content on all matters related to security from the new living document, “Security Best Practices” to the just released series on pentesting beginning with “Pentesting 101: Know Your Network.”
Legal Innovation and Tech Fest
This spring ILTA is collaborating with The Eventful Group for a conference in Melbourne, Australia on May 16-17. The Eventful Group formed 20 years ago and specializes in building enterprise technology communities and conferences for business and IT people in HR & Payroll, Business Intelligence, Financials and Engineering. They decided to research the legal technology sector last year to build a community for innovators in Australia and New Zealand. This research led to the programming developed for the Legal Innovation and Tech Fest next month. To learn more about The Eventful Group and their collaboration with ILTA read “But Wait… There’s More –Legal Innovation and Tech Fest Part I.” Several ILTA members will speak at the Fest. Watch for highlights on their presentations in the weeks leading up to the Fest. Here’s more information on the Legal Innovation and Tech Fest and registration.
SOMETHING EXTRA – The FBI/iPhone Saga
The news cycle on the FBI/iPhone issue and now the successful unlocking by the FBI has kept many of us curious, argumentative and very worried. Seth Hallem of Mobile Helix shares his thoughts on the implications for the legal industry in “FBI Cracks the iPhone – How and What Are the Legal IT Implications?”
