Last week members discussed lateral legacy records, law firm adoption of the cloud and more. Catch more stories about innovative client-focused work from five great ILTACON TV interviews and see last week’s if you missed them. Explore curated sources on these topics including some from ILTA’s treasure chest.

Lateral Pains and Gains

According to a recent NALP Survey, lateral movement continues to increase. In 2015 lateral hiring increased 8.5 percent increase over 2014. When onboarding or offboarding a lateral, information governance policies and knowledge management best practices come into play.  “Supporting Lateral Attorney Integration Through Knowledge Management” and “Matters from Laterals: A Matter Mobility Workshop,” sessions at ILTACON 2016, covered the challenges with laterals and provided advice and opportunities. Mike Guernon of Orrick discussed risk management issues related to laterals in his ILTACON TV interview. For offboarding consider the ILTA white paper article, “Offboarding: Managing the Challenge of Attorney Exits,” and the quick how-to recording “Who Knew?! – Use E-Discovery Software to Streamline the Lateral Offboarding Process.”

Cloud Adoption in Firms

ILTA’s 2015 Technology Survey asked “For the upcoming year, how do you predict your firm’s adoption of cloud-based solutions will change?” See page 259 for the predictions and page 260 for the barriers to adoption. ILTA can keep you busy reading about cloud pitfalls, trends, opportunities, conflicts and client collaboration for weeks with articles, webinars and conference sessions. I’ve picked a sampling of recent resources based on the discussions around cloud adoption in law firms last week. In the ILTACON 2016 session, “Your Servers in the Cloud: Real-World IaaS,” the panel discussed their experiences with partial or full cloud adoption. For another real-life example, consider “Exchange On-Premise vs. Exchange Online – A Law Firm Bakeoff.” If your firm has a presence beyond the U.S. borders, listen to the ILTACON 2016 session, “New International Standard for Cloud Due Diligence.” In this summer’s Peer to Peer, read the best practices article, “Future of the Data Center.” Last, security will remain front and center so you will want to listen to the watch “Cybersecurity and the Cloud: Enabling Next Generation IT Architecture.”

SOMETHING EXTRA – Preferred Vendor Programs and Email Storage

Ricky Brooman and Adam Rosenthal offer a beginner’s guide on preferred vendor programs covering everything from the what, why and how to the traps to avoid in “Preferred Vendor Program: PVP 101.”

Some members discussed the possibilities and hazards of unlimited mailboxes this past week. ILTA’s 2015 Technology Survey contains a section dedicated to managing email storage and provides insight into the actions your peers take to determine limiting mailbox size or not. The email storage section begins on page 154.

As ILTA’s content curator, I’m always monitoring the discussion forums to discover what topics are top-of-mind among the members. Each week, I focus on a few areas that spark your interest, and I provide some curated resources to assist your own information-gathering on the topics.
