As ILTA and ILTAns look toward ILTACON in August, ILTA’s CEO, Joy Heath Rush, sits down to discuss how the generative AI conversation will continue at ILTACON...
Continuing the Conversation about AI
I can’t think of a single conversation I’ve had with an ILTAn in the past three months that hasn’t included AI. And, based on these conversations, it sounds as though similar discussions are happening in law firms, law departments, law schools, courts, etc. on a daily basis.
Our product and solution providers are being asked continually where AI fits in their offerings and how they see the path forward.
In one recent roundtable of Chief Innovation Officers, a participant reported “an unprecedented level of lawyer interest in AI technology” as compared with other technologies now and historically. A CIO who is testing an AI-based solution said, “we are struggling with too much adoption.” I am not sure I’ve ever heard those words before.
As we continue these conversations, the topics will diverge and begin to revolve around a few core issue areas: what lawyers (and we!) need to know about AI; how AI-enabled products are vetted and how ROI is calculated; the ethical implications and legal and regulatory landscape for AI in the practice; use cases; and billing and profitability.
For those of you attending ILTACON, you may want to continue the conversation in one or more of the sessions referred to below. (If you are not attending ILTACON, be on the lookout for the recordings of the sessions; they will be available for purchase.) You may also want to participate in the upcoming Master Class (virtual) on New Standards for Success: The Role of AI in Moving Beyond the Billable Hour.
The following ILTACON sessions will help you with standardizing and communicating vocabulary and issues around AI; this is critical in having meaningful conversations with our lawyers!
-
A Beginner’s Guide to Large Language Models (LLMs). In this introductory session, we will focus on the basics of Large Language Models and showcase examples of AI-Powered technologies (ChatGPT, Bard, etc.).
-
Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence, Bias, and Explainability - and Regulatory Responses. Lawyers and judges have to show their work - does AI? How do we know we can trust AI, when we have already seen well-publicized examples of bias and errors? To what extent do providers and users of AI systems need to understand exactly how AI systems arrive at their results?
We also have sessions on the practical applications of AI today:
-
A Day in the Life of an AI-Powered Legal Group. This session will focus on the practical uses of the various AI technologies to envision what life in legal will be like with these applications.
-
GenAI in Practice: Real World Applications. We will look at current use cases and implementations
Are you tasked with implementing AI-based technologies? How about figuring out where it fits in your operational portfolio? We will be talking about that, too!
-
Economic, Risk Management, and Talent Aspects of Successful AI-Enhanced Product Implementations. How is AI different from other technologies' risk and ethics implications? What new skills does a legal organization need to develop or acquire to effectively leverage AI? How are pricing and other commercial decisions different when machines rather than humans are doing some of the work? This session will focus not so much on the “what” of AI in legal, but the “how;” how do legal organizations need to change in order to effectively integrate AI?
-
Why Taxonomies Still Matter in a World of AI. Aligning around a common language and deploying standard taxonomies can unlock a competitive advantage for any organization navigating today's data tsunami. And the newest AI tools will need this foundation more than ever in order to get reliable results. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn from the successes and challenges of those who have embarked on captivating taxonomy projects.
AI-facilitated and enabled functionality will, I guarantee, be something our business partners will be anxious to discuss with our members. We share this journey! Don’t be shy about asking each other questions—that's the peer-powered-ness of ILTA!
I hope I have the opportunity to talk AI – or any other topic on your mind – with you either in-person or virtually at an upcoming ILTA event!
PS- Written by me, not ChatGPT…. 😉
