Security Sessions at INSIGHT

Last week I spoke with Jon Segger about the upcoming security sessions he has organised for ILTA’s INSIGHT in London on 17 November. Jon Segger, Information Security Manager at Linklaters, sits on ILTA’s LegalSEC Steering Committee. He joined the steering committee after meeting members while working to set up the LS-ISAO. Jon shared that the educational programing needs for UK and European firms “are not broadly different” than those for the U.S. firms. In his role on the steering committee he helps to inform UK and European law firms of the resources available through ILTA and other organisations. He also watches for regional issues bubbling to the surface that ILTA should address like the upcoming requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Though the regulations hail from the EU they will affect most firms. See “What You Need to Know About GDPR” for more on this session at INSIGHT.

Jon is excited for all the security programming at this year’s INSIGHT. Jon will moderate a security roundtable. Each table will discuss several unique security topics in five to ten minute segments. These small groups will then share the salient points of their discussion and any takeaways with the room. Some topics you will find at the roundtables include security awareness and firm culture, incident response successes and best practices, client audit strategies and threat intelligence sharing with groups like ILTA, LS-ISAO and CiSP. To get ideas flowing at your table, consider the issue Jon and I discussed – managing client expectations for security audits that do not fit law firm software and structure including data leakage prevention tools used in financial institutions.

After the security roundtable consider attending the “Current Threat Landscape and Managing Threat Intelligence” session. The new generation of cyber-threats requires a fundamentally new approach to cyber defence. Based on unsupervised machine learning and probabilistic mathematics self-learning technologies are the key to solving the crisis created by this new age of cyberattacks. John Dyer of Darktrace will teach delegate the implications of the new era of cyber-threats for business networks, why 100 percent network visibility and intelligence allow you to preempt emerging situations and much more. Dyer will offer real-world examples of subtle threats that routinely bypass traditional controls.

Following the threat landscape session you may want more details. If so, go to the “Anatomy of Cyberattacks” session with Dominic Chell, Director of MDSec. An expert in cyber security, Dominic regularly presents at hacking forums and consults and trains global organisations in legal, financial, government and retail sectors. He will offer a session on the Internet of Things and how the tools and techniques a hacker uses have evolved. He will provide a demonstration or two on attacks with some technical details and plenty of higher level overview and strategic recommendations.

Besides these great learning opportunities in security, ILTA’s INSIGHT has a full slate of sessions on many topics of interest in legal technology. Bring a colleague or two so as not to miss a thing. Register today.
