Excel - Named Cells

Rather than using cell addresses in a formula like =B1*C1, consider naming cells to make your formulas more readable and descriptive. For example, instead of the formula mentioned above where B1 is the attorney hours and C1 is the billable rate; you can create named cells, AttyHrs and Rate, and then build a formula that reads: =AttyHrs*Rate.

To create a named cell:

  • Click in the cell you want to name.
  • Click in the Name Box (located to the far left of the formula bar on your worksheet).
  • Type a descriptive Name (without spaces).
  • Press the Enter key on your keyboard.

To quickly navigate to a named cell:

  • Click the down arrow to the right of the Name Box.
  • Select the Named Cell from the dropdown list.

To delete a named cell:

  • From the Formulas ribbon, click the Name Manager button in the Defined Names group.
  • Click to select the Name you wish to delete and click the Delete button.
