Speaking at ILTACON
What I have gotten out of volunteering
Volunteering for ILTA not only boosted my confidence, it is a rewarding way to contribute to the legal tech community. When I first started, I learned all the basics about legal tech from ILTA content. You can get access to knowledge from baseline to master level. If you keep sharing that knowledge by volunteering to speak, participate in content teams or write articles or blogs you are a part of this strong community.
Why you should get more involved
Volunteering is a two-way street. When you volunteer you not only contribute your time and your knowledge. You also receive access to input from peers, collaboration opportunities, and challenges to keep educating yourself. It is a very rewarding experience

What I have gotten out of volunteering
I have learned a lot professionally and have built a lot of great relationships.
Why you should get more involved
There are so many great opportunities to learn, even if you are farther along in your career like I am, and so many ways to contribute and build lasting relationships.

What I have gotten out of volunteering
I've enjoyed helping new speakers be successful in their first time presenting in a conference setting. It's allowed me to get to know more people across the industry at a more personal level.
Why you should get more involved
Volunteering helps you to see the bigger picture and to step outside of yourself. It opens your eyes to the work that's required to make something like ILTACON a success for all attendees, and to create a thriving community that you want to be a part of.

I have loved volunteering as a Member Liaison the past few years.
What I have gotten out of volunteering
Personally, volunteering for ILTA has created a level of family you cannot find anywhere else within the legal industry. Professionally, volunteering for ILTA has afforded so many groups and individuals that I can relate and share with on technology, user experience, implementations and law firm growth.
Why you should get more involved
I would tell everyone that there are all types of opportunities available. Whether you are an introvert or extrovert, never diminish what you know - and how many different ways you can bring value to ILTA, yourself and your organization.

I can't pick a favorite. All the roles have been great in very different ways.
What I have gotten out of volunteering
Professionally - ILTA volunteering helped me create a huge network of peers. Several times my boss has asked me "Do you know someone through ILTA who can help with xyz?" Almost always the answer is yes and their help is invaluable. I also have been able to gain a lot of knowledge about the state of the industry in general from my various conversations with other peers. Finally, ILTA provided me with leadership opportunities with large groups of really talented people which wouldn't ever have been possible for me at my firm.
Personally - The first peer I really met through ILTA is still a friend I stay in touch with today after 10+ years even though they left legal tech long ago. There are many others across the country and across the globe who'd gladly drop whatever plans they had to meet me for lunch or coffee if I ever happened to be in their city.
Why you should get more involved
Reason to be an ILTA Volunteer:
* 100% free Leadership and Project management experience
* Excellent way to build your personal brand
Terrific way to give back to your Legal Tech community
* Great way to build your professional network
* It's lots of fun and will bring you joy.

What I have gotten out of volunteering
I have gained so much from volunteering. Personally, I have gained friendships, mentors, and contacts that I never would have had the opportunity to meet had I not volunteered. Professionally, I have learned so much from every interaction, article and community post read, and webinar attended from both members and business partners. Volunteering has helped me do my day job better because of the information I have learned and the people I have met.
Why you should get more involved
I would tell others they should get involved because the moment you volunteer your time for this organization is the moment that you feel like you are a part of ILTA instead of a consumer of ILTA. The involvement can be as small or as large as you are comfortable. Replying to a post on the communities is just as much volunteering for ILTA as speaking, writing, presenting or sitting in an official, titled role. Through everyone contributing in the way and amount that is comfortable to them, #WeAreILTA.

What I have gotten out of volunteering
The adventure of volunteering means that I am offering something – something that is not required nor an obligation. Most of the time, that means I am working side by side with others within the ILTA community. For me, this is a golden ticket to enter a neighborhood of legal tech knowledge, where creativity and evolution fill the streets. ILTA is peer powered and provides an education far beyond expectation that continues to allow me to hone many skills. The knowledge and skill I gain I then share, not to just give or get something, but to help one another develop new capacities for action; It's about creating learning processes.

Volunteerism is a well-known phenomenon for everyone. Volunteerism has an ancient past powerful, a present active and problematic, and a perspective more promising for the future. Volunteering within the ILTA community where solidarity, cohesion, and unity are a focus shines a light on the future and makes it that much more fun and rewarding for me.
Why you should get more involved
There are many for me, here are my top three:
1. The connections made and the knowledge gained.
2. Allows me to see and participate in new experiences specific to legal technology.
3. The collaboration and teamwork is just pure fun.

Fun Fact: There is a statistic out there that says volunteering keeps you young :)

Working on the ILTACON conference committee of course! This is my 9th year as a conference committee member and each year I look forward to working with returning members, new volunteers, and the awesome ILTA events team.
What I have gotten out of volunteering
As a fledgling legal IT trainer at my first law firm, I was terrified of the word "networking" because I didn't consider myself outgoing nor did I think I had anything to say that other people would want to know. Attending the ILTA conference (before it was "ILTACON") and local ILTA events, I discovered peers with whom I had a lot in common and benefitted from sharing information with them. I excelled at work! I also discovered that there were a lot of people who loved to dance (as I do) and met ILTA volunteers on the dance floor at conference. If these volunteers were so much fun, I HAD to apply for a conference committee member position. 9 years later I have made friends and peers and mentors with whom I share professional and business experiences. I often travel for work and make it a point to connect with ILTA friends and peers wherever I visit. ILTACON itself serves as a "family reunion" and I look forward each year to celebrate by dancing with old and new friends. Volunteering with ILTA helped me realize that networking, for me, meant sharing. The best part of volunteering? Facilitating connections and seeing colleagues grow professionally as an ILTACON committee volunteer.
Why you should get more involved
1. Yes, there is a time commitment. The investment in time as a volunteer will pay dividends well into your professional and personal life.
2. You may not be a dancer like me. But being an ILTA volunteer, you will discover and connect with people who share your interests - musicians, runners, artists, sports enthusiasts, writers, techies, Succession fans, etc. Which then leads to other connections.

They've all been rewarding, but serving on the Program Planning Council has been a unique privilege.
What I have gotten out of volunteering
Personally, it's given me the opportunity to develop relationships with my ILTA peers and with ILTA staff in much deeper ways than I could just by participating in the online communities or other ILTA venues. I now know several dozen people in high places who I feel comfortable approaching if I ever have a question or idea. Professionally, my ILTA volunteer service has been recognized and rewarded by my boss, which is never a bad thing!
Why you should get more involved
Like so many things in life, the more you give to ILTA, the more you get. While there's certainly a part of ILTA volunteering that's purely altruistic, there are plenty of opportunities to help in ways that are directly related to your own self-interest ... whether that's through networking, education, or helping to shape ILTA membership benefits to make them more valuable to you.

I’ve been involved with ILTA since the LawNet days, but I’ve always been on the dark side, a vendor. With ILTA opening up, it created the opportunity to be a volunteer.
What I have gotten out of volunteering
It’s all the same reasons why you want to be involved with ILTA to start with – learning and networking, but ongoing and in a more specific way. The CCT I’m working on has been welcoming and I’ve learned a ton in this short time from the experience and perspective that members bring to the table.
Why you should get more involved
As I’ve seen with other professional organizations, you get back exactly what you put in. The more you invest in ILTA, the more rewards you will reap. If your career trajectory involves legal tech, there is no better investment in professional development than ILTA.

I'd have to say it's a toss up between being on the User Support Steering Committee (2006-2009) and being invited t be on the Content Coordinating Team (2017-2018). Both of these groups showed me that my experiences could be of value to others and allowed me and the teams to create relevant-to-the-times programming for my colleagues. These teams introduced to some of the best in the business, including some who are no longer with us; the esteemed Honora Wade, and Kaleigh Brighton; as well as many still consider to be friends today; Jennifer Steele, Denise Ash, Michelle Spencer, Marritta Terrell, LeAnn Davidson and so many more.
What I have gotten out of volunteering
I learned so much from the above named groups about leadership, teamwork, and how to be a better trainer. For some of them, their continued friendship is priceless.
Why you should get more involved
Get more involved because the more you give, the more you get. It's funny how it works for us. Get involved as a way to focus on something else for an hour or so each week. It will send you back to your work tasks at hand sharper and more focused and you'll feel good about doing it.

My Favorite Volunteer Opportunity
My favorite volunteer opportunity has been as a Member Liaison for the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex. As an ML, I've been able to work with many different members and organizations to bring many educational opportunities to our membership and other people even outside of our members. I enjoy having a positive impact in my community, and it gives me joy to know I'm offering new educational opportunities to others around me.
What I have gotten out of volunteering
I get joy from giving back to the legal technology community. I also get a sense of belonging to a larger team of individuals that together, we bring success and higher education to people around us. Finally, I'm able to glean knowledge from those who I spend time around, which gives me the ability to call on the true experts when I need them.
Why you should get more involved
First, you'll impact the community around you. So much of our lives we are called upon to follow. When was the last time you led? By volunteering, you get the be the leader and lead your friends and co-workers. Second, volunteering gives you a sense of belonging so you're never alone and you never feel helpless. And third, volunteering gives you the sense that you are important to a cause and to the legal technology community.

There are so many that it is difficult to say. I would say that I most enjoy coordinating and/or taking part in educational events as part of the Litigation and Practice Support Coordination team. This allows me to keep on top of current developments in eDiscovery.
What I have gotten out of volunteering
I have been able to meet people around the world in similar professions. This has proven immensely helpful when I needed to reach out to people for advice and/or suggestions. I was able to turn to people who I would not otherwise have ever met.
Why you should get more involved
It provides you with a chance to meet people you would not otherwise get to meet. If you are a lifelong learner, it's the best place to volunteer as you meet like minded individuals who also want to learn and who also want to assist with the learning of others. I have heard from many people new to legal who have said that we are very lucky to have such an organization.

My Favorite Volunteer Opportunity
This year I had the opportunity to join the ILTACON Planning Committee which has been a great experience so far, and I've learned a lot from the other volunteers about how to plan a good conference session.
What I have gotten out of volunteering
I've met a huge number of people globally who have shared their experience and knowledge with me, and it's really helped me to view problems from different points of view. I've found a great deal of value in being able to discuss issues candidly with peers.
Why you should get more involved
Its hugely rewarding to connect with other legal technology professionals across the world, and ILTA opens up so many opportunities to expand your own skills as well as improve your own profile in the industry and connect with experts in your field.

The best part of volunteering is meeting so many great like minded people. I volunteered not only to co-chair the Training and Education SIG but to briefly cover maternity leave which meant I got to speak to other SIG Chairs from the other sectors.
What I have gotten out of volunteering
For me professionally it gives me an opportunity to share my own experiences not only within the ILTA community but also with my peers. On a personal level I have met some really interesting people and have made many friends over the years I have been volunteering. There are many synergies within law firms and it is great to listen to other peoples experiences too.
Why you should get more involved
Volunteering is an experience that doesn't have to take up a lot of time, but the rewards far out weigh any time spent working with the ILTA team, who are also a great bunch of people to work with. A fantastic way to organically grow your network, join some amazing education, knowledge sharing and social events!

Hard to pick just one... co-chairing ILTACON Europe last November was a lot of fun, moderating a G100 session at ILTACON was... let's just say 'memorable'... judging the Peer Awards opened my eyes to so much good stuff being done... and right now, as a member of the Talent Council I have the privilege of working on the Board election.
What I have gotten out of volunteering
Above all else, for me ILTA is about access to a peer network that is collectively more intelligent and more experienced than I will ever be, and is happy to assist, whether that's in person, via the Community pages, or through groups such as the Zoom advisory board etc. Importantly though, it cuts both ways - it's a great way to give back to the community and events like ILTACON Europe are a lot of fun to be part of.
Why you should get more involved
Doesn't matter how long you've been doing your job or how long you've worked in legal, there's always more to learn and it's always useful to grow your network. ILTA can give you experience you won't find in your current role, or even your next one. And don't be put off by the time commitment - there are plenty of opportunities that are short term, flexible in timings, or only a few hours a month.

As a DEI Committee member, and having the opportunity to work with a group of like-minded individuals who are passionate about promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in their organization or community is so empowering for me. This work is essential for creating a more equitable and inclusive society, and it requires a collaborative effort from many different individuals and groups.

Joining this committee has been a rewarding experience because it provides a platform for making a real impact on the lives of others. By promoting greater understanding, acceptance, and inclusion, we can help create a more welcoming and supportive environment for people from all backgrounds within our community.
What I have gotten out of volunteering
We are part of such a diversely rich community, with different backgrounds, life experiences and knowledge. Learning more about the people that make up this community has been so enriching for me. I believe that every conversation can teach you one thing that you did not know, and one thing to action. Speaking and sharing ideas with these incredible individuals has encouraged me to learn new things, and try new things. The personal growth that I have gotten from volunteering has challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone, and take on new responsibilities. These experiences have helped me to grow personally and to become a more well-rounded individual.
Why you should get more involved
Through my experience, I have found that volunteering can offer a sense of purpose and create a positive impact on the community. It can expand your knowledge and skills through new experiences and discussions, especially with the rich knowledge network that we have. There are abundant networking opportunities which lead to new connections, and mentoring relationships. The friendships are an added bonus! In other words, Fun, Friendly and Fulfilling. #weareILTA.

My Favorite Volunteer Opportunity
Since I took the role over at the start of 2022, I have thoroughly enjoyed leading the UK's Litigation Special Interest Group. In large part due to the pandemic, this collective had been stagnant and was struggling to identify what role it could occupy in the UK's litigation technology market given the plethora of other groups such as Women in eDiscovery, ACEDS, and the eDiscovery Breakfast Club that already served people in this geography. By running regular events that are exclusively for in-house legal technology professionals, we now have a growling membership of approximately 60 people and our events get up to 30 attendees, and the discussion is free-flowing, topical, and of great interest.
What I have gotten out of volunteering
I have always volunteered, both in a personal capacity and a professional capacity. Prior to volunteering for ILTA I founded and was President of the ACEDS UK Chapter, which was the first chapter established outside of the USA. During the pandemic, I also volunteered for my local foodbank delivering food to families that needed it, and I now volunteer for a local charity https://the-hedgehogs.org.uk/ focused on helping local people in need.

What I love about volunteering is the ability to meet new and interesting people from a variety of walks of life by working together to achieve a common goal. Volunteering has given me a chance to learn new skills, expand my personal and professional networks, and to work on projects to derive satisfaction, not because of remuneration, but because the projects themselves are worthwhile and the completion of them has far-reaching benefits. .
Why you should get more involved
The beauty of volunteering is that you can start small. If you can only volunteer for a couple of hours a month, find a role that only takes that much time. Similarly, you can choose to volunteer in a capacity that interests you, so if you only have a couple of hours a month to spare, find a role/group that best represents your personal/professional interests and take on tasks that excite you. If you follow this philosophy, your time spent volunteering in effect becomes leisure time, and who doesn't want more time for leisure?

What I have gotten out of volunteering
At least another 30 LinkedIn connections! The aim of the group is to ensure that we have people to attend events with so we can take advantage of all of the opportunities/seminars etc that ILTA offer. Turning up alone can be daunting (even for someone like me) but having a broader network means I almost always have a buddy. I have also been invited to speak on panels and approached for mentoring.
Why you should get more involved
We obviously all have very busy jobs but volunteering with ILTA gives you the opportunity to meet lots of different people for a variety of reasons. If you have an interest in moving to a different field or even to simply extend your knowledge, there are lots of ways in which you can grow whilst staying in your role.

This is a tough question to answer, as I have enjoyed so many of my roles within the organization. However, if I had to choose, I would say that being a city representative and my work on ILTACon truly stand out as favorites. My journey with ILTA began as a city representative, where I had the pleasure of creating a tight-knit community of legal technology professionals here in Columbus and starting the Ohio Statewide Litigation Technology conference. This was where my love for volunteering with ILTA first blossomed. Another favorite experience of mine was the nine years I spent working on ILTACon. During this time, I met countless inspiring individuals from around the globe. The friendships, memories, and lessons learned from my time on the ILTACon planning committee will always hold a special place in my heart. As for my current role, I am incredibly excited and looking forward to making it as spectacular as my previous experiences.
What I have gotten out of volunteering
One of the most profound aspects of my time with ILTA has been the rewarding and deep connections I've formed with fellow volunteers, industry professionals, and the ILTA staff. These relationships have been instrumental in not only fostering personal growth but also in expanding my professional network. The bonds we've created have led to fruitful collaborations and lasting friendships, transcending geographical and cultural barriers.
Why you should get more involved
If you're considering getting involved with ILTA, I wholeheartedly encourage you to take the leap. The rewards are truly immeasurable, and the impact you can make is far-reaching. My journey volunteering with ILTA has been an unforgettable experience filled with growth, connections, and leadership opportunities.

LegalSEC, because I had no idea what to expect and was very much out of my league. But similar to other ILTA volunteer experiences, I was welcomed, mentored and I learned a lot from this opportunity,
What I have gotten out of volunteering
A unique level of connectivity to peers personal and/or professional. The ability to benefit from the process of reaching common ground with peers even if they are in differing disciplines. Learning quickly and having fun while doing it. Having my own “people” to reach out to with a random request for information and knowing they will respond (and also looking forward to doing the same in return when called upon).
Why you should get more involved
Avoid reinventing the wheel; you have an international network of peers to reach out to. Help others avoid reinventing the wheel by paying forward lessons you’ve learned. ILTA has done an incredible job creating a wide variety of volunteering opportunities, there truly is something for everyone in this community, you just need to be a little curious to find your niche, you won’t be disappointed.

What I have gotten out of volunteering

Qual foi a sua oportunidade de voluntariado favorita ao longo dos anos com a ILTA? My Favorite Volunteer Opportunity
I have participated in several ILTA initiatives over the past 4 years and have learned a lot from all of them. It was very rewarding to participate in the CCTs and be able to interview and interact with professionals from around the world, some of whom became great friends. Today, being part of the Talent Council is also a source of great pride, as I feel that I am actively helping to build the future of ILTA through the Board's choice. Other opportunities that were very special were the focus groups with Young Professionals and the Women Who Lead initiatives, which focus on female leaders.
O que você ganhou (pessoal ou profissionalmente) por ser um voluntário? What I have gotten out of volunteering
ILTA is a safe environment to explore our potential. I can say that I've grown a lot as a person and as a professional with all the learning I've been accumulating over the years. I learned about videoconferencing tools (before they became essential with the pandemic) and project management techniques, I participated in the organization of events and focus groups, not to mention the rich exchanges with high-level professionals. And in the midst of all this professional growth, I've been building beautiful friendships and improving my English. ILTA has become a big family for me.
O que você diria sobre as razões pelas quais outras pessoas deveriam se envolver mais com a ILTA? Why you should get more involved
I would say that regardless of where you are located, your age, your level of experience, or the position you hold in your organization if you are interested in learning more about the nuances of the global legal market and expanding your look at the world, become a volunteer. Everyone at ILTA has been very helpful and understanding. And if you want to get more involved but don't know how you can talk to me. I will be more than happy to help!

What I have gotten out of volunteering
Personally, I enjoy helping others and being part of a community effort. Professionally, ILTA has provided access to a wealth of different networking opportunities and forums.
Why you should get more involved
Staying knowledgeable about our industry is so important as it is ever-changing. Being involved allows you to be aware of the current industry trends and connect with others who are experiencing similar situations; this allows for more communication and solutions! In addition, volunteering will make a large impact on your career and personal life.

My Favorite Volunteer Opportunity
The most exciting and fun volunteer opportunity was when I had the pleasure of being a part of the ILTACON Committee. I met and got close to so many interesting people and it was challenging, invigorating, and rewarding to watch the many ideas shared grow into a successful event. But, my favourite opportunity has been serving on the Board of Directors for six years - I have learned and developed so much as a person and professional while giving back to a community that has given me so much throughout my career.
What I have gotten out of volunteering
I have met a diverse group of exceptionally talented individuals, many of whom have become close friends, mentors, coaches, or confidantes. Volunteering has given me access to a broad range of perspectives on the full spectrum of issues that I have confronted at all stages of my career in legal tech. It has given me the opportunity to learn and then teach, be mentored and then mentor, and contribute and then lead. It has given me a sense of pride and accomplishment, along with a wealth of wonderful friends and fond memories.

My Favorite Volunteer Opportunity
Being part of the ILTACON Planning Committee as a Team Coordinator has been an amazing experience. Helping to shape the educational sessions for the conference and getting to know the other committee volunteers, and having fun while we're doing it!
What I have gotten out of volunteering
I have been involved in a few ILTA volunteer opportunities: ILTACON session speaker, ILTACON Planning Committee Session Coordinator and Team Coordinator, and the My Mentor program. The networking, friendships, and hearing first-hand feedback on how other organizations have approached various projects, and what did and didn't work for them, and lessons learned are all valuable benefits I've realized.
Why you should get more involved
"Just do it." The ILTA community is a friendly, knowledgeable, and friendly bunch! Get involved, and when you do, don't hesitate to ask questions and provide your ideas and opinions - ILTA is a judgement-free zone.
